UNESCO Chief Denounces Murder of Mexican Journalist Tapia

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Ismael Villagómez Tapia in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, on 16 November 2023.

I condemn the killing of Ismael Villagómez Tapia. In addition to such tragic loss of life, attacks like these have a chilling effect on independent journalism. I urge the authorities to fully investigate this crime and bring the perpetrators to account.

Ismael Villagómez Tapia’s career as a journalist spanned over twenty years. Most recently he had been working for El Heraldo de Ciudad Juárez and had previously worked as a photojournalist for El Norte de Juárez. He was shot killed in his vehicle.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
